Botox for sweating treats excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) by blocking the nerve signal that switches on the sweat glands. At the West Hampstead clinic the underarm treatment takes about 30 minutes, dryness develops over 3 to 14 days, and it typically lasts 4 to 6 months, sometimes longer. It is carried out by Dr Chiké, a GMC-registered doctor. Your fee is confirmed at consultation, once your treatment plan is agreed.

Excessive sweating is more than an inconvenience. It can mean changing clothes through the day, avoiding certain colours, and feeling self-conscious in meetings or social situations. Botox for sweating is one of the most reliable treatments for it, switching off the overactive sweat glands in the treated area for months at a time.

ABOUT BOTOX FOR SWEATING

What is Botox for sweating?

Botox for sweating is a treatment for hyperhidrosis, a common condition that causes excessive sweating in areas such as the underarms, palms and feet. It uses the same botulinum toxin used for anti-wrinkle treatment, but placed into the skin of the affected area rather than into muscle. There, it blocks the chemical signal (acetylcholine) that tells the sweat glands to produce sweat, so the area stays dry.

It does not stop your body cooling itself overall; it switches off the glands in one treated area, most commonly the underarms, while the rest of your body sweats normally. For people whose sweating is not controlled by strong antiperspirants, it is a straightforward and effective option.

ABOUT BOTOX FOR SWEATING

How the treatment works

Treatment starts with confirming the area and, for the underarms, a quick check of where the sweating is heaviest. A series of small injections is then placed just under the skin across the treated area using an ultra-fine needle. For the underarms this is around 100 units of Botox in total, split across many tiny injection points so the whole area is covered evenly.

Each injection feels like a small pinprick, and the underarm is a forgiving area to treat, so most people find it very tolerable. The appointment takes about 30 minutes. A doctor-led protocol and accurate placement are used to keep the treatment to the intended area and reduce the chance of sweating simply shifting elsewhere.

“Hyperhidrosis is genuinely limiting for the people who have it, and it is one of the most rewarding things to treat because the relief is so clear. Done properly it gives people months of not having to think about it.”

Dr Chiké Emeagi, MRCS, GMC 4418489

TREATABLE AREAS

Areas that can be treated

The underarms are the most common and most predictable area to treat, and the focus of this page. The same approach can help other areas, with results that vary by site:

Underarms

The most effective and reliable area, with the longest-lasting results.

Hands and palms

Effective, though the injections are more sensitive and results can be shorter.

Feet

Possible for sweaty soles, again more sensitive to treat.

Scalp and forehead

Can be treated where sweating is concentrated there.

At your consultation Dr Chiké will confirm whether your sweating pattern is well suited to treatment and which area to prioritise.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Results and what to expect

The effect is not immediate. Most people notice a clear reduction in sweating within 3 to 5 days, with the full result by around 1 to 2 weeks. A four-week review is included to confirm the area is dry and even, and to top up any spot that is still active.

Underarm results typically last 4 to 6 months, and for some people longer, before the treatment is repeated. Longevity varies from person to person and by area; hands and feet tend not to hold as long as underarms. Many people settle into treatment around twice a year to stay comfortable through the warmer months.

It is worth being realistic. The treatment reduces sweating in the treated area, it does not cure the underlying tendency, so it is repeated to maintain the effect. It also will not change sweating elsewhere on the body, and very rarely some people notice slightly more sweating in another area.

BEFORE & AFTERCARE

Recovery, downtime and aftercare

There is no real downtime and you can return to your day straight away. A little redness or mild tenderness at the injection sites settles quickly. There are a few simple steps before and after that help the result.

Before your appointment

  • Shave the underarms about three days before (not on the day), which reduces stinging.
  • Do not wear deodorant or antiperspirant for 24 hours before the appointment.

After treatment

  • Avoid saunas, hot tubs and intense heat for 48 hours.
  • Do not rub or massage the area, and stay upright for the first few hours.
  • Skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours. You can apply deodorant again after about 12 hours.
IS THIS FOR ME?

Am I a suitable candidate?

Botox for sweating suits most healthy adults with troublesome excessive sweating, particularly of the underarms, where antiperspirants are not enough. A consultation confirms suitability, identifies the area, and rules out other causes that may need investigation first.

Treatment is not carried out during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if you have a neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis, or alongside certain interacting medication. If your sweating is sudden, one-sided or new, Dr Chiké may suggest checking for an underlying cause before treating.

WHO IS YOUR PRACTITIONER

Why Doctor Led Matters

Botulinum toxin (Botox®️) is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) under UK law. It is illegal for a non-prescribing practitioner to administer it. At Hampstead Aesthetics, Dr Chike both prescribes and administers every treatment himself — there is no delegation to a non-medical injector.

The UK aesthetics industry remains a partially unregulated space: it is currently legal for an individual with no medical training to inject certain substances. We believe patients deserve better, which is why we operate to the same clinical and ethical standards required of all GMC-registered doctors, regardless of the treatment setting.

Emergency Safety Protocols

  • Anaphylaxis kit on site — full adrenaline protocol in the event of an allergic reaction
  • Hyaluronidase available — reversal agent for filler-related emergencies
  • ACE-certified practitioner — Dr Chike holds emergency complication management certification
  • 999 escalation protocol — written procedures in place for emergency hospital transfer

We carry full professional indemnity insurance covering all treatments performed at this clinic.

Consent, Privacy & Your Rights

If you have a concern about your treatment, you are entitled to raise it directly with Dr Chike and, if unresolved, to escalate to the General Medical Council or the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman.

Your consultation, treatment, and 4-week review are all conducted by the same doctor. There are no hand-offs.

Underarm results typically last 4 to 6 months, and for some people longer, before a repeat is needed. Longevity varies between people and by area; hands and feet tend not to hold as long as underarms. Many people settle into having it around twice a year to stay comfortable, especially over the warmer months.

Most people find it very tolerable. A series of tiny injections is placed just under the skin with an ultra-fine needle, and each feels like a small pinprick. The underarm is a forgiving area to treat. Hands and feet are more sensitive, and comfort measures can be used there if needed.

Yes, in trained medical hands. It uses the same well-established medicine as other Botox treatments, placed into the skin rather than muscle. Side effects are usually mild and short-lived, such as minor redness or tenderness. Because it is a medical condition, having it assessed and treated by a doctor is the safest route.

It blocks acetylcholine, the chemical signal that tells your sweat glands to produce sweat. With that signal interrupted in the treated area, the glands stay switched off and the area stays dry for months. It only affects the area treated, so the rest of your body continues to regulate temperature normally.

For most people, no. Occasionally some people notice slightly more sweating in another area, known as compensatory sweating, but it is uncommon with underarm treatment. Accurate, doctor-led placement that keeps the dose to the intended area helps reduce the chance of this happening.

Shave the underarms about three days before, not on the day, as this reduces stinging, and avoid deodorant or antiperspirant for 24 hours beforehand. Wear a loose top you do not mind lifting for the treatment. No other preparation is needed, and the appointment takes about 30 minutes.

Avoid saunas, hot tubs and strong heat for 48 hours, do not rub or massage the area, and skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Stay upright for the first few hours. You can apply deodorant again after about 12 hours. Most people carry on with their normal day immediately.

For the underarms, around 100 units of Botox in total, split across many small injection points so the whole area is covered evenly. Hyperhidrosis needs a higher dose than facial anti-wrinkle treatment to be effective, which is why a flat fee covering the full dose is used rather than charging per unit.

Yes. As well as the underarms, the hands, palms, feet, scalp and forehead can be treated where sweating is concentrated there. The underarms are the most effective and longest-lasting area. Other sites can be more sensitive to treat and results may not last as long, which Dr Chiké will explain at consultation.

Most people repeat underarm treatment every 4 to 6 months to stay dry, often settling into around twice a year. There is no harm in stopping; the sweating simply returns to its previous level over time as the effect wears off. Dr Chiké will suggest timing that suits your pattern and the seasons.

Treatment is not carried out during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if you have a neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis, or alongside certain interacting medication. If your sweating is new, sudden or one-sided, Dr Chiké may suggest checking for an underlying cause before treating.

No, it manages it rather than curing it. The treatment switches off the sweat glands in the treated area for several months, and is repeated to maintain the effect. For many people that level of control is enough to remove the daily worry, which is why it is one of the most reliable options for troublesome sweating.

Allow at least two weeks before an important event such as a wedding, holiday or big presentation, since the full drying effect develops over 1 to 2 weeks. Treating a couple of weeks ahead means you are reliably dry on the day rather than partway through the effect.
