Nefertiti Neck Lift in London: Jawline and Neck Lift with Anti-Wrinkle Injections

The platysma is a thin sheet of muscle that runs from the chest up over the jaw, and with age it pulls the jawline down and the neck into bands. Relaxing its upper edge lets the muscles of the face win the tug of war, and the jawline sharpens over two weeks. It is a subtle treatment, done well it is the best-value jawline treatment there is, and done badly it changes how you smile or swallow.

The Nefertiti neck lift is a non-surgical treatment in which small doses of botulinum toxin, a prescription-only muscle-relaxing medicine, are injected along the lower border of the jaw and into the vertical bands of the neck to relax the upper part of the platysma muscle. The platysma pulls the jawline and the corners of the mouth downward, and when it is relaxed the muscles that lift the face are unopposed, so the jawline lifts and sharpens, the early jowl softens, the neck bands smooth and the angle between neck and jaw becomes cleaner. It is named after the Egyptian queen whose sculpted jawline it aims for. The treatment takes 15 minutes at 8 to 14 points, results appear from day five and are full at two weeks, and the effect lasts three to four months at first and longer with repeat treatment. It suits early jowls, a softening jawline and neck bands in the late thirties to sixties, in men and women. Your fee is confirmed at consultation, once your treatment plan is agreed.

ABOUT THE NEFERTITI LIFT

What the platysma does, and how relaxing it lifts the jawline

The platysma is a broad, thin sheet of muscle that starts on the chest, runs up the front and sides of the neck, crosses the lower border of the jaw and blends into the muscles of the lower face. In youth it lies flat and does little. With age it shortens, thickens into vertical bands, and its constant downward pull on the jawline and mouth corners begins to win against the muscles above that lift the face. The result is a jawline that loses its edge, the first hint of a jowl at the corner of the jaw, a downturn at the mouth, and cords that stand out in the neck when you speak or grimace. Skin and fat play their part, but in most faces from the late thirties the platysma is doing more of the damage than people realise.

The Nefertiti lift changes the balance. Small doses of the medicine, usually 30 to 50 units in total, are placed along the lower edge of the jaw where the platysma crosses it, and into the upper part of any vertical bands. Relaxed there, the muscle stops pulling down, the elevator muscles of the face are unopposed, and over ten to fourteen days the jawline lifts by a few millimetres and sharpens, the mouth corners turn up a little, the bands soften and the neck-to-jaw angle cleans up. It is not a facelift and it is not a dramatic change; it is the kind of result where people say you look well, or rested, and cannot say why. It lasts three to four months at first and stretches to four to six with repeat treatment as the muscle weakens.

What it does not do: it does not remove fat, so a double chin needs fat dissolving or HIFU; it does not tighten loose skin, which needs Sofwave or a thread lift; and it does not lift an established, heavy jowl, which is thread or surgical territory. It is the right treatment for the early jawline, and the jowls and sagging skin page explains how I stage the later ones. It pairs naturally with masseter treatment, which narrows the jaw while the Nefertiti lifts it.

WHO IT IS FOR

Five reasons patients come for a Nefertiti lift

The dose and the pattern change with the reason. The consultation, with the platysma examined while you grimace, decides both.

A softening jawline

The edge of the jaw blurring in the late thirties and forties, before a true jowl. The best candidate; the earlier the treatment, the more it holds.

Early jowls

A hint of fullness at the corner of the jaw. The Nefertiti lifts it partially; a thread lift or Sofwave for anything more.

Neck bands

Vertical cords in the neck at rest or on speaking. Treated directly along the band; the upper part responds best.

Downturned mouth corners

A mouth pulled down by the platysma and the depressor muscles.

The jawline in men

A third of my Nefertiti patients are men wanting a sharper jaw without anyone knowing. The pattern is adapted to a heavier platysma.

With masseter treatment

A wide, soft jaw: masseter treatment narrows it, the Nefertiti lifts it.

THE TREATMENT

What happens at the consultation and the treatment

The consultation takes 15 to 20 minutes. I ask what you have noticed and when, and I examine the lower face and neck at rest, smiling, speaking and grimacing, because the platysma only shows itself when it contracts. I feel the bands, watch how far the pull reaches into the face, and judge how much of the jawline change is muscle, how much is fat and how much is skin, because the Nefertiti only treats the first. I look at the depressor muscles at the mouth corners, which are often treated at the same time, and at the masseter, which is often the second half of the plan. Then I mark the points, usually 8 to 14, along the jaw and down any bands, and we agree the dose and the price in writing.

The treatment takes 10 to 15 minutes. No anaesthetic is needed; the needle is very fine and each injection is a brief pinch. The doses are small, placed superficially into the muscle just below the jawline and along the bands, and kept well away from the muscles of the mouth and, lower in the neck, the muscles of swallowing. The total is usually 30 to 50 units depending on the strength of the platysma. There is no mark afterwards beyond an occasional pinpoint of blood.

You leave with written aftercare and my direct number. The review is at two to three weeks, when the result is full and I add a small top-up if one side is stronger, at no charge. Repeat treatment is at three to four months at first, stretching to four to six. The Nefertiti combines with masseter treatment to narrow and lift the jaw together, with anti-wrinkle injections to the upper face in the same appointment, with chin filler to give the lifted jawline a corner to end at, and with Sofwave or Profhilo to the neck for the skin.

“The Nefertiti is the treatment most often done with too much and in the wrong place. The dose is small, the points are along the jaw and the upper bands, and the muscles of the mouth and the swallow are left alone. Get that right and the jawline sharpens in a fortnight and nobody can tell why.”

TIMELINE

What happens week by week

The muscle relaxes gradually. This is the course most patients follow after a first treatment.

Time What is happening What you notice What to do
Day of treatment
Medicine binding at the nerve endings
Nothing; pinpoint marks at most
Stay upright 4 hours; no rubbing, gym, alcohol or lying face-down for 24 hours
Days 3 to 5
Platysma beginning to relax
The neck feels slightly different on grimacing; jawline starting to look cleaner
Nothing; note any change in your smile or swallow and tell me, both are rare
Days 7 to 10
Most of the effect established
The jawline visibly sharper; bands softer; mouth corners a little lifted
Nothing
Day 14
Full effect
The complete result
Review at 2 to 3 weeks; small top-up if one side is stronger
Months 3 to 4
Nerve endings recovering
The pull gradually returning
Repeat treatment when you notice the jawline softening again
After 3 or 4 treatments
Platysma weaker; habit of pull reduced
Longer gaps, often 4 to 6 months
Maintenance

Around one patient in twenty-five notices a slight weakness when lifting the head from a pillow or a brief change on swallowing in the first fortnight; both come from dose reaching too low in the neck, both are temporary, and both are avoided by keeping the points high.

RESULTS

Results and what to expect

A good Nefertiti result is a jawline with an edge again. In the mirror the corner of the jaw is cleaner, the early jowl sits back where it belongs, the neck bands are quieter when you speak, and the mouth corners have lifted a millimetre or two so the resting expression is less stern. In profile the angle between the neck and the jaw is sharper. It is a change of a few millimetres in the right places, and it is the kind that people notice as you looking well rather than as a treatment. The result is full at two weeks and holds for three to four months at first; with repeat treatment the platysma weakens and the gap between visits lengthens.

The honest expectations. The Nefertiti treats muscle pull, so a jawline blurred by fat or loose skin changes less, and I say which yours is at consultation. It lifts an early jowl partially and an established one very little. The neck bands soften at the top and less at the bottom, because the lower neck is where the muscles of swallowing are and the dose is kept away from them. A small number of patients notice a change in their smile if the medicine reaches the muscles of the mouth, or a brief weakness on swallowing or lifting the head if it reaches too low; both are temporary and both are avoided by correct placement. Started in the early forties, before the jowl has formed, it is one of the most effective preventive treatments in the clinic.

I photograph from the front, at 45 degrees and in profile, at rest and grimacing, before treatment and at the review.

Marking up neck Botox

Softening jawline, one treatment

40 units at 12 points. Photographed at 45 degrees at 3 weeks; jawline sharpened.

Neck bands, one treatment

36 units along the jaw and both bands. Photographed grimacing at 3 weeks.

Nefertiti with masseter, male patient

Nefertiti plus masseter treatment. Photographed at 8 weeks; jaw narrowed and lifted.

AFTER TREATMENT

Recovery, downtime and aftercare

The first four hours. Stay upright; no lying down, no massage of the neck, no leaning your chin on your hand.

The first 24 hours. No gym, sauna, alcohol, facials or tight scarves and collars. No sleeping face-down.

The first two weeks. Nothing to avoid. If you notice any change to your smile, any difficulty swallowing or weakness lifting your head, tell me; all are uncommon, temporary and useful for planning the next dose.

Bruising. Occasional, small, and covered with make-up from the next day.

You leave with written aftercare, the date of your review and my direct contact details.

IS THIS FOR ME?

Is a Nefertiti neck lift right for you?

The test is simple: grimace in a mirror, pulling the corners of your mouth down. If cords stand out in your neck and your jawline blurs, the platysma is pulling, and relaxing it will help.

A good candidate

A jawline that has begun to soften, usually from the late thirties. Early jowls. Vertical neck bands at rest or on speaking. Downturned mouth corners. Someone wanting prevention before a jowl forms. Men wanting a sharper jaw discreetly. Any skin type and tone.

Better with something first or alongside

A wide jaw: masseter treatment alongside. Fat under the chin: fat dissolving or HIFU first. Loose skin along the jaw or neck: Sofwave or threads. Established, heavy jowls: a thread lift, with the Nefertiti to hold the result. A short chin: chin filler to give the lifted jawline a corner.

Not suitable now

Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis. Swallowing difficulties or a history of aspiration. Certain antibiotics and muscle relaxants, discussed at consultation. Heavy laxity or a turkey neck, where I will discuss surgery honestly. Infection at the site.

WHY US

Why choose Hampstead Aesthetics for a Nefertiti neck lift

The Nefertiti is an anatomical treatment: the platysma blends into the muscles of the mouth above and sits over the muscles of swallowing below, and the difference between a sharp jawline and a crooked smile or a weak swallow is where the points are placed and how much goes in. I am a GMC-registered doctor (4418489), a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a GP with a master’s degree in aesthetic medicine, I taught anatomy before I did this, and I have performed the Nefertiti technique for over a decade. I examine the platysma while you grimace, mark every point, inject every dose myself and review you at two to three weeks.

I am both the prescriber and the injector, as the law requires for a prescription-only medicine. The clinic is on West End Lane in West Hampstead, NW6, two minutes from West Hampstead Jubilee line, Overground and Thameslink stations. Patients come from Hampstead, Swiss Cottage, St John’s Wood, Belsize Park, Kilburn, Primrose Hill, Camden and across North and West London, and a third of them are men.

AT HOME

What makes the result last

Posture, because hours looking down at a phone shortens the platysma and deepens the bands; screens at eye level help more than any cream. Sunscreen on the neck every day, because the skin over a lifted jawline still ages. A retinoid at night through the prescription retinoid programme, taken down onto the neck. Profhilo to the neck once or twice a year for the crepiness the Nefertiti does not treat. Stable weight, because fat under the chin blurs the jawline the Nefertiti has sharpened. Repeat treatment when the jawline softens rather than on a fixed date, and expect the gap to lengthen.

DOCTOR LED TREATMENT

Why Doctor Led Matters

The platysma blends above into the depressor muscles of the mouth and lies below over the strap muscles of the neck and the muscles of swallowing. Medicine placed too far forward reaches the mouth and the smile drops on one side for two to three months; placed too low or in too large a dose, it reaches the swallowing muscles and produces difficulty swallowing or weakness lifting the head, which is unpleasant and, in the wrong patient, dangerous. The medicine is prescription-only, which means a prescriber must see you face to face before it is given; it is still routinely offered without that consultation.

At Hampstead Aesthetics I am both the prescriber and the injector. I examine the platysma while you grimace, mark the points along the jaw and the upper bands, keep the dose small and the placement high, and review you at two to three weeks.

FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Nefertiti neck lift?

A non-surgical treatment in which small doses of botulinum toxin, a prescription-only medicine, are injected along the lower jaw and into the neck bands to relax the platysma muscle, which pulls the jawline and mouth corners down with age. Relaxed, the jawline lifts and sharpens, the early jowl softens and the neck bands smooth. It takes 15 minutes, works fully at two weeks and lasts three to four months at first. It is named after the Egyptian queen whose sculpted jawline it aims for.

Your fee is confirmed at consultation, once your treatment plan is agreed.

Three to four months after a first treatment. With repeat treatment the platysma weakens and the habit of pull reduces, and most patients find the result lasts four to six months by the third or fourth treatment. Repeat when the jawline softens rather than on a fixed date.

Usually 30 to 50 units in total, spread across 8 to 14 points along the jawline and down the upper part of any bands, depending on how strong the platysma is when you grimace. The dose is decided by the muscle, not by the price, which is why the fee is flat.

Partially, and best early. An early jowl, a hint of fullness at the corner of the jaw, lifts noticeably because the muscle pulling it down is relaxed. An established, heavy jowl is descended fat and skin, which the Nefertiti cannot reposition; that needs a thread lift or Sofwave, with the Nefertiti afterwards to hold the result.

Yes, in the terms patients use. Neck Botox usually means treating the platysmal bands; jawline Botox usually means the Nefertiti pattern along the jaw, or sometimes masseter treatment for slimming. The Nefertiti combines the jawline and the upper bands in one pattern. Because the medicine is prescription-only, suitability is decided at a face-to-face consultation with me as the prescriber.

Barely. The needle is very fine, the doses are small and superficial, and each injection is a brief pinch; most patients rate it one or two out of ten. No anaesthetic is needed and the treatment takes 10 to 15 minutes.

Not if the points are placed correctly. The smile muscles sit above and in front of the treated area and the swallowing muscles below, and keeping the dose small and the points along the jaw and the upper bands keeps the medicine away from both. A change to the smile or a brief weakness on swallowing after treatment elsewhere is a placement problem, and it is temporary.

Yes, and around a third of my Nefertiti patients are men, most of them wanting a sharper jawline without anyone knowing. The pattern and dose are adapted to a heavier platysma, and the result is a cleaner jaw and neck angle rather than any softening of the face.

Yes, and it is the commonest combination in the clinic. Masseter treatment narrows a wide jaw over six to eight weeks; the Nefertiti lifts and sharpens its edge over two. Upper-face anti-wrinkle injections can be done in the same appointment. Your fee is confirmed at consultation, once your treatment plan is agreed.

When the jawline first begins to soften, which for most people is the late thirties or early forties. Started then, before a jowl has formed, the Nefertiti is one of the most effective preventive treatments in the clinic, because it stops the platysma pulling the tissue down year after year. It still helps in the fifties and sixties, but less, and usually alongside tightening.

None. There may be pinpoint marks for an hour and, occasionally, a small bruise. Stay upright for four hours, avoid the gym, alcohol and tight collars for a day, and go back to work straight away.

No. The medicine has not been studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding and I defer treatment until after. Profhilo to the neck and skincare are the options in the meantime.

The Nefertiti for a jawline that has begun to soften and for prevention; a thread lift for skin and fat that have already descended into a jowl. Many patients over fifty have threads to lift and the Nefertiti three weeks later to stop the platysma pulling the result down.
