Skin Boosters in London

A skin booster treats the skin itself, not the shape of the face. There are six on my shelf, and the consultation exists to choose the one your skin needs rather than the one that was advertised to you.

Skin boosters are injectable treatments placed into the skin rather than beneath it, to improve its hydration, elasticity, texture and thickness without adding volume or changing the face. They divide into three families. Hyaluronic acid boosters, Profhilo, Seventy Hyal and Restylane Skin Booster, hold water in the dermis and stimulate collagen and elastin. Polynucleotide boosters, Rejuran and polynucleotides, are DNA fragments that repair and rebuild damaged, thin or inflamed skin. Vitamin and amino-acid complexes such as NCTF nourish dull, tired skin. Each is given as a short course of two or three sessions a month apart and lasts six months or more. I use hyaluronic acid for dehydration and dullness, polynucleotides for thin, damaged or under-eye skin, and NCTF for a dull complexion that needs a lift before an event. The right one is decided by examining your skin, not by the brand you searched for.

ABOUT SKIN BOOSTERS

What a skin booster is, and what it is not

Dermal filler is placed beneath the skin to restore volume and shape; anti-wrinkle injections relax the muscle that folds it. A skin booster is placed into the dermis, the living layer of the skin, to change the quality of the skin itself. From the late twenties the dermis loses around one per cent of its collagen a year, its hyaluronic acid content falls so it holds less water, and its fibroblasts, the cells that make both, slow down. The skin becomes thinner, drier, less elastic and duller, and fine lines appear where it creases. A booster addresses that layer directly, and because it adds no volume it cannot change the shape of the face or make anyone look done.

The three families work differently. Hyaluronic acid boosters deliver a form of the molecule the skin already uses to bind water; Profhilo uses a high concentration of ultra-pure hyaluronic acid that spreads through the tissue from ten injection points a side and stimulates collagen and elastin as well as hydrating, while Seventy Hyal and Restylane Skin Booster are placed as a grid of micro-injections for targeted hydration. Polynucleotide boosters, Rejuran and polynucleotides, are purified DNA fragments from salmon that signal fibroblasts to repair, reduce inflammation and rebuild the dermal matrix; they suit thin, damaged, inflamed or under-eye skin, and they are the family behind the search for Korean glass skin. NCTF is a cocktail of hyaluronic acid with over fifty vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants that feeds a tired complexion rather than rebuilding it.

What skin boosters do not do: they do not add volume, lift, or replace filler where the face has hollowed; they do not soften lines caused by muscle movement, which is the territory of anti-wrinkle injections; and they do not tighten loose skin, which needs Sofwave or HIFU. The conditions pages on ageing skin, dry and sensitive skin, fine lines and under-eye skin explain where boosters sit in a wider plan.

THE BOOSTERS I USE

Six boosters, three families

I stock a range so that the treatment is matched to the skin rather than the other way round. The consultation decides which.

Profhilo

Hyaluronic acid. Hydration and bioremodelling across the whole face, neck or body. Two sessions.

Rejuran

Polynucleotides. Repair, texture and resilience; the under-eye and glass-skin treatment. Three sessions.

Polynucleotides

Repair for thin, inflamed or scarred skin, the eyes and the scalp. Three sessions.

Seventy Hyal 2000

High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid. Targeted hydration and glow at a lower price. Three sessions.

Restylane Skin Booster

Stabilised hyaluronic acid. Long-lasting hydration for the face, neck, décolletage and hands. Three sessions.

NCTF by FillMed

Vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants. A radiance treatment for dull, tired skin. Three sessions.

THE TREATMENT

What happens at the consultation and the treatment

The consultation takes 30 minutes. I examine the skin for hydration, thickness, elasticity, texture, pigment and inflammation, ask about your routine, and ask what you want to see: glow before an event, better texture over months, or repair of skin that has thinned. I look at whether volume loss, muscle lines or laxity are doing more of the work than skin quality, because a booster on a hollowed face disappoints and I would rather say so. I photograph in standard light. Then I recommend one booster, occasionally two in sequence, and a course.

The treatment takes 20 to 30 minutes. A numbing cream is applied for fifteen minutes. Profhilo is placed at five points on each side of the face, or along the neck, from which it spreads; the other boosters are placed as a grid of small, shallow injections across the treated area, or with a cannula for the under-eye. Small bumps at the injection points are visible for a few hours with Profhilo and up to a day with the grid techniques. You go home with written aftercare.

Courses are two sessions four weeks apart for Profhilo, and three sessions three to four weeks apart for the others. Results are judged four weeks after the last session, and a maintenance session every six to nine months holds them. Boosters combine well: polynucleotides first to repair thin skin, then Profhilo to hydrate it, is the sequence I use most in patients over forty-five; a booster two weeks after anti-wrinkle injections or filler finishes the skin over a corrected shape; and a booster after a course of RF microneedling or peels supports the healing.

“Skin boosters are about quality, not volume. I match the product to the skin in front of me: hyaluronic acid for dehydration, polynucleotides for repair, a vitamin complex for a tired complexion, and I treat in a sensible course. The aim is healthy, glowing skin that still looks like yours.”

WHICH BOOSTER FOR WHICH SKIN

Matching the booster to the skin

Each row is a booster with the skin it suits. The realistic-result column is what I say in the room.

Booster Best for How it works When you see it Course Realistic result
Dehydrated, dull, crepey skin across the face or neck; the first booster for most
High-concentration HA spreads through the dermis; stimulates collagen and elastin

2, 4 weeks apart; maintenance at 6 months
Plumper, brighter, firmer skin; lasts around 6 months
Thin, damaged, inflamed or acne-scarred skin; the under-eye; glass-skin texture

RESULTS

Results and what to expect

Hydration shows first: within a week of a hyaluronic acid booster the skin looks plumper and reflects light better, and patients say it feels different under make-up. The collagen and elastin response builds from four weeks, with texture, fine crepiness and firmness improving to a peak around eight to twelve weeks after the course. Polynucleotides work more slowly and more deeply; the change is in the thickness and resilience of the skin, most visible under the eyes and on skin that had been thin or scarred. NCTF gives a glow within a week that lasts a few months.

The honest expectations: a booster changes skin quality, not the shape of the face, so a hollowed or sagging face needs filler or tightening as well; the effect is visible to you and to people who know you, and invisible as a procedure; it lasts six months or so and needs maintenance; and a booster on skin that is not protected from sun is a booster wasted. What a well-chosen patient can expect is skin that looks hydrated, even and healthy without anyone being able to say why.

Grid boosters: Seventy Hyal, Restylane Skin Booster, NCTF. Small bumps and pinpoint marks across the area for up to 24 hours; occasional bruising. No make-up for 24 hours.

Rejuran and polynucleotides. Small marks and mild swelling for 24 to 48 hours, more visible under the eyes. Bruising is possible in the under-eye.

For all boosters. No exercise, sauna, alcohol or sun for 24 hours. No massage of the area unless I have shown you. Daily SPF thereafter.

You leave with written aftercare, the dates of the rest of your course and my direct contact details.

IS THIS FOR ME?

Are skin boosters right for you?

Most skin benefits. The question is which booster, and whether something else should come first.

A good candidate

Dull, dehydrated or crepey skin. Thin, damaged or scarred skin. Under-eye crepiness or darkness with thin skin. Anyone who wants better skin without a change of shape. Any skin type and tone. Willing to wear SPF, which keeps the result.

Better with something first or alongside

Hollowing at the cheeks, temples or under the eyes: filler does what a booster cannot. Expression lines: anti-wrinkle injections first, booster two weeks after. Loose skin: Sofwave or HIFU. Active acne or rosacea flare: calm first, then boost.

Not suitable now

Pregnant or breastfeeding. Active infection or cold sores in the area. A fish allergy for polynucleotide boosters, which are derived from salmon. Certain autoimmune conditions, discussed at consultation.

WHY US

Why choose Hampstead Aesthetics for skin boosters

Most clinics stock one or two boosters and recommend them to everyone. I am a GMC-registered doctor (4418489), a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a GP with a master’s degree in aesthetic medicine, and I keep six boosters from three families so that the recommendation follows the skin. The Rejuran page on this site is the most visited treatment page the clinic has, because patients searching for a specific booster want a doctor who can explain why it is, or is not, the right one for them.

Every consultation and every injection is carried out by me. The clinic is on West End Lane in West Hampstead, NW6, two minutes from West Hampstead station, and sees patients from Swiss Cottage, St John’s Wood, Belsize Park, Primrose Hill and across North London.

AT HOME

What makes a booster last

Sunscreen every morning, because ultraviolet degrades the collagen and hyaluronic acid a booster has just stimulated; a booster without SPF is a six-month result made into a three-month one. A retinoid at night, through the prescription retinoid programme or ZO Skin Health, keeps the fibroblasts working between courses. A vitamin C serum in the morning. A moisturiser with hyaluronic acid and ceramides, applied to damp skin, holds surface hydration over the dermal hydration the booster provides. Two litres of water a day does less than people hope, but dehydration shows in the skin within a day. No smoking, which halves the life of every collagen treatment. A maintenance session every six to nine months.

DOCTOR LED TREATMENT

Why Doctor Led Matters

Skin boosters are injected into the face, including around the eyes, where the vessels that supply the eye lie close to the surface. Placed in the wrong plane or the wrong product in the wrong skin, they cause lumps, prolonged swelling, bruising and, rarely, vascular injury. The UK has no legal requirement for the person injecting to hold any qualification, and skin boosters are among the treatments most often given by non-medical practitioners.

At Hampstead Aesthetics I assess the skin, choose the product, perform every injection myself, and review the photographs. Hyaluronidase is held on site for hyaluronic acid products, and every patient has my direct number.

YOUR SAFETY

Emergency Safety Protocols

  • Anaphylaxis kit on site — full adrenaline protocol for allergic reaction.
  • Hyaluronidase on site — reversal agent for hyaluronic acid filler and part of the vascular occlusion protocol.
  • ACE-certified practitioner — I hold emergency complication management certification.
  • 999 escalation protocol — written procedures for emergency hospital transfer.

Every product and device is CE-marked and sourced from authorised UK distributors. The clinic holds full professional indemnity insurance covering all treatments.

CONSENT

Consent, Privacy & Your Rights

Before treatment you have a full written consultation covering medical history, contraindications, realistic outcomes and the specific risks of each treatment in your plan. Treatment only proceeds with informed, documented consent. If you have a concern, raise it with me directly; if it is not resolved, you can escalate to the General Medical Council.

Your consultation, treatment and review are all conducted by the same doctor. There are no hand-offs.

FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best skin booster?

The one matched to your skin. For dehydration and dullness across the face, Profhilo. For thin, damaged, scarred or under-eye skin, Rejuran or polynucleotides. For glow at a lower price, Seventy Hyal. For a dull complexion before an event, NCTF. There is no best booster, and a clinic that recommends one product to everyone has one product.

They do different jobs. Profhilo hydrates and firms skin that is dry and dull, over two sessions, and suits most faces in the thirties and forties. Rejuran repairs skin that is thin, damaged, inflamed or scarred, over three sessions, and is the better choice for the under-eye, for acne-scarred skin and for the smooth, dense texture patients describe as glass skin. In older or thinner skin I often use polynucleotides first and Profhilo after. My blog on polynucleotides versus Profhilo goes into the detail.

No. Filler is placed beneath the skin to restore volume and shape and it changes how the face looks. A booster is placed into the skin to improve its hydration, texture and thickness and it changes how the skin looks. A hollowed face needs filler; a dull, crepey one needs a booster; many faces over forty benefit from both, two weeks apart.

Profhilo: two, four weeks apart. Rejuran, polynucleotides, Seventy Hyal, Restylane Skin Booster and NCTF: three, two to four weeks apart depending on the product. Results are judged four weeks after the last session, and a maintenance session every six to nine months holds them.

Profhilo around six months. Rejuran and polynucleotides six to twelve months, because they rebuild the skin rather than hydrating it. Restylane Skin Booster six to nine months. Seventy Hyal and NCTF three to six months. Sun protection and a retinoid at home extend every one of them.

Numbing cream is applied for fifteen minutes and the injections are shallow and quick. Profhilo is ten injections and stings briefly at each; the grid techniques are many small pricks; the under-eye is done with a cannula through one entry point. Patients describe it as uncomfortable for a few minutes rather than painful.

Small bumps at the injection points for six to 24 hours depending on the product, occasional bruising, and mild swelling under the eyes for a day or two with polynucleotides. No make-up for 12 to 24 hours; no exercise, sauna or alcohol for a day. Most patients treat on a Friday and are unremarkable by Saturday afternoon.

Yes, and it is the commonest combination in the clinic. Filler and anti-wrinkle injections correct shape and movement; a booster two weeks later finishes the skin over the result. The order is shape first, skin second, because a booster on a face that then has filler placed through it is disturbed.

Yes. Every booster I use is suitable for all skin types and tones; none of them involves heat or light, so there is no risk of pigment change. Polynucleotides are particularly useful in darker skin, where they reduce the inflammation that leads to post-inflammatory marks after other treatments.

Polynucleotides or Rejuran I, three sessions a month apart, placed with a cannula. They thicken and brighten the thin under-eye skin, which is what makes dark circles and crepiness look better. Where the problem is a hollow rather than the skin, tear trough filler or cheek filler is the answer, and my under-eye page explains how I decide.

No. There is no evidence of harm, and no evidence of safety, and I do not inject a pregnant or feeding patient with any booster. Skincare, a gentle Hydrofacial and LED are the options in the meantime, and the booster course starts once feeding has finished.

At Hampstead Aesthetics Seventy Hyal is £150 a session or £350 for three, Profhilo £300 or £550 for two, NCTF £200 or £550 for three, Restylane Skin Booster £250 or £650 for three, and Rejuran or polynucleotides £400 or £1,000 for three for the full face and £300 or £800 for three for the eyes. The £50 consultation fee is redeemed against treatment.

The glass-skin finish is dense, smooth, evenly hydrated skin with tiny pores, and it comes from polynucleotides more than from hyaluronic acid: Rejuran over three sessions, with a retinoid and SPF at home, and often a Profhilo course afterwards for the hydration. My Rejuran page explains the finish and its limits honestly.
